Reconciliation means acknowledging the history of Australia and the ongoing challenges faced by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities since colonisation. A reconciled country values the importance of connection with traditional histories, language, community and Country and its First People. It champions the voices of those who have been without one and fosters reciprocal relationships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and the wider community through respect, understanding and acknowledgement of past injustices while working towards an evolving future.
In order to strive towards an inclusive future, we will engage in ongoing learning to ensure our values and practices are supportive of the Kaurna community and facilitate a welcoming environment. Our engagement with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspectives through professional development supports understanding and in turn prompts critical reflection of current practices to guide future steps that truly reflect Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander voices and promote reconciliation.
Reconciliation within the Early learning space centres children's wellbeing, identity and connection to both community and Country. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories, cultures and perspectives are woven into learning through the arts, language, stories and environment curated within the service.
The Aboriginal ways of learning informs pedagogical practice, highlighted within our focus on supporting children's care of local land and wildlife to nurture appreciation and gratitude. We acknowledge the traditional custodians of the land and honour their endeavours through fostering connection with and care for Country.
We are committed to expanding our understandings, improving practices, championing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples' voices, supporting Indigenous business and self-determination and building strong relationships with Kaurna families and communities.
