For Australia, the term 'reconciliation' refers to creating a sense of togetherness between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and non-Indigenous Australians, which is built upon justice, forgiveness and healing. With this definition in mind, our vision for reconciliation is to ensure unity, equality and equity within our service. Reconciliation is more than just a word but an action, it must be felt through the whole body and come alive through a united force and continuous progress. Only with this approach will reconciliation influence a strengthened nation which is built upon reciprocal relationships between all Australians.
At Learning Avenues Early Education, Care and Kindergarten, we aim to be a place where the values, cultures and rights of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are respectfully embedded across our learning environments and teaching practices. To achieve this, our educators need to continuously strive towards building their cultural responsiveness and confidence to raise their awareness of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander ways of knowing and being. This will ensure that respectful and trustworthy knowledge is imparted to the children that we are educating. We understand that the children we are teaching now will become those that shape the trajectory of the future response to reconciliation in Australia. It is therefore crucial that we as a service are committed to empowering the community in which we reside and promote inclusivity across all aspects of our programs.
