Our vision at St Luke's Uniting Kindergarten Highton for reconciliation is for all people to be standing together to create socially just and culturally safe relationships between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and the wider community.
We are committed to building relationships with our local community to develop our children and their families’ knowledge of and respect for the Wadawurrung People on who's Land St Luke's stands. We aim to do this through the establishment of a welcoming environment where Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people feel safe, comfortable and accepted, and where they feel confident that their children will be respected, listened to and receive high-quality learning. Our welcoming environments will foster a space and enable Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children, families and employees to uphold cultural practice and share their perspectives We believe that culture is integral to a child’s identity and sense of belonging and is the cornerstone of success in lifelong learning. We strive to inspire our children, families and the wider community to search for new ways of doing and being.
The children at St Luke's Uniting Kindergarten's vision for reconciliation is that everybody can 'play and be nice' together, we 'let all people in' and that we 'should make people happy.'
We are committed to developing understandings of 'Care for Country' amongst our children to reflect on the knowledge of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and to think towards the future and how we can be more sustainable in our everyday practices through the integration of this knowledge. This will involve working with local Wadawurrung groups to increase our knowledge. Through doing so, not only the children's but also the knowledge of educators and their families can be deepened.
