For The Hills Montessori School reconciliation means genuine, respectful and meaningful connection with Aboriginal peoples, to further develop an understanding of Peramangk and Kaurna histories and cultures, our community in the Adelaide hills.
We will continue communicating with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in our local community, actively listening to their histories and teachings, and we will respectfully consult and listen to advice and guidance. We will work together by respectfully engaging Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples to be involved in our school community, to expand our knowledge and understanding.
A reconciled Australia would feel more inclusive of all people, it would look more connected, demonstrating an understanding of differences within the wider community.
Our staff have at times feared 'doing the wrong thing', in teaching about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures but through consulting with, listening to and building respectful relationships with local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, we are learning how to respectfully deliver an educational program with substance. We have asked questions if we are unsure and have gained confidence to inform our ourselves and our student cohort.
We are committed to engaging with Peramangk and Kaurna Elders, where possible and local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in our community. We will continue to invite members of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities to our school, to respectfully connect,, ask questions and learn together. Mostly importantly, we will work together towards a common goal of connection and respect.
At our school we value and encourage diversity. Reconciliation is a daily attitude followed by daily actions. We have so much to learn from the oldest living culture in history and our school feels privileged to play its part in moving forward with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples toward healing and unity.
