Our vision for reconciliation at Alive Catholic Early Learning Centre is an Australia that embraces unity between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in the local community, through respectful relationships, shared responsibility, and learning from Traditional Custodians about what it means to care for Country. This will be guided by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and our Catholic Values of faith, perseverance, compassion, integrity, respect, wisdom and justice.
When we asked children how we are kind to Country and care for our place, they shared that caring for Country means protecting and respecting all living things. Children spoke about giving water, keeping Country safe, looking after birds, spiders, trees, and tidying our shared spaces. They described Country as a place where we live, play, learn, and belong, sharing that we sit on the grass, work together, and care for it so it can continue into the future.
Children also connected caring for Country with kindness towards others, explaining that being gentle, helping people when they feel sad, and being kind to everyone is part of looking after Country. These responses reflect children's understanding of Country as something to be loved, respected, and cared for together.
