VISION FOR RECONCILIATION

Our vision for reconciliation begins with our acknowledgement of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples as the Traditional Owners and Custodians of Lands across Australia. We recognise that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples’ cultures, heritages and continuing contributions shape our shared cultural heritage as Australians. We will also continue to celebrate the fact that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures are the oldest, continuous living cultures on the planet, with archaeological evidence dating back over 40 000 years.

As part of our commitment to reconciliation, we regret the impacts on family, cultural identity, Lands and waters, languages and communities experienced by many Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples as a result of colonisation. This shared history is important for all of us to actively acknowledge and address as it has deep consequences that continue to impact current and future generations.

At the same time, we acknowledge that reconciliation is about moving beyond safe to respectful action. Reconciliation is about valuing and celebrating Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and strengths. There is much to gain from teaching young children about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples’ cultures, heritages, and continuing contributions, which we can do through respectful and reciprocal engagement with local communities.
