VISION FOR RECONCILIATION

At First Steps Learning Academy we have a strong belief in reconciliation and philosophy of respecting our local community that shapes our reconciliation journey.  Our education program provides equal and equitable opportunities for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and all Australian children. We are committed to supporting children to learn about Australia’s true histories, and to develop respect for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and continuing contributions Drawing on the five dimensions of reconciliation identified by Reconciliation Australia, allows our service to create a clear picture of what we are aiming towards on our reconciliation journey, and supports us in working towards achieving these aims: Race and Relations: Our vision and mission is to understand, respect and actively value Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and cultures. We are committed to ensuring we have strong, two-way relationships between our centre and First Nations communities. Equality and Equity: Our vision is to ensure that we provide Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples the opportunities to participate equally and equitably in all areas of our service. Unity: First Steps Learning Academy strives to bring people together in unity. We value unity as an important part of our vision and we are committed to ensure that everyone actively values, respects, understands and recognises Australia’s First Nations peoples’ cultures and contributions. Respecting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and heritages is very important to our service and its commitment to fostering unity. Institutional Integrity: Our vision is to ensure our policies, procedures, and philosophy of our service are guided by, and support progress towards, each of the dimensions of reconciliation. Historical Acceptance: Our vision is to promote respectful learning about, and ensure the acceptance of, our nation’s true histories. We commit to ensuring children understand the colonial wrongs of the past, and how to take action towards a stronger future of reconciliation, through implementing a focus on reconciliation and truth-telling within our curriculums and wider service activities.
