Kinross College’s vision for reconciliation is to celebrate our community and take shared responsibility for reconciliation. We are committed to deeply connecting with, and learning about, the cultures, languages, practices and stories of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students and their families. Kinross College is located on Whadjuk Noongar Boodjar Country and, through respectful truth telling processes, we recognise the impact of past histories since colonisation on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
We celebrate the significant contributions Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have continued to make to our community, alongside their bravery, strength and resilience. We believe in quality education that supports students to make meaningful transitions to life beyond the College, increasing their chances of realising their full potential, having a voice, and positively influencing their communities. Using respectful and inclusive language and terminology is an essential component of reconciliation at Kinross College. The ways we speak about reconciliation is just as important as the ways we act as language is itself active, and can impact on attitudes, understandings and relationships in a very real sense. We are using respectful and inclusive language and terminology throughout our RAP and other communications.
We place importance on the collaboration of non–Indigenous people in the reconciliation process as they adopt inclusive practices that ensure Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people have a meaningful role to play in decisions that affect them. We are optimistic for a time when equality and equity is actively fostered between non-Indigenous and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in our community and when reconciliation is a lived reality and not simply an idea.
At Kinross College the implementation of a RAP is for all students, staff, parents and the wider community.
Our aim is:
• to acknowledge and recognise the contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
• to acknowledge and develop a relationship between Kinross College and the Noongar people.
• to have an environment where Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures are experienced and valued by all students; and
• to provide opportunities for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students to celebrate and embrace their heritage.
