Reconciliation is about the respectful recognition of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and their valuable contributions to society in the past, present and future. Rivermount College fosters mutually respectful relationships between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, communities and all other Australians. Our vision for reconciliation starts from our beliefs that we acknowledge the equity and equality of all people from diverse cultural backgrounds, including First Nations peoples. Achieving reconciliation will require raising awareness of and knowledge about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples’ histories, cultures and traditions. At Rivermount College we recognise the importance for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students to foster a sense of personal pride in their cultural identity. We support and value the promotion of positive self-esteem and personal dignity of all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, both as individuals and as cultural groups so that they may experience equality and equity as respected members of the community. We aim to build relationships, respect and opportunities in the classroom, playground and community by developing an understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and histories This promotes reciprocal, peaceful and harmonious relationships and co-existence of First Nations people and non-Indigenous people of Australia.
