Carmel College’s vision for reconciliation is to visibly and proudly support and celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, histories, cultures and contributions, along with fostering equal and equitable educational opportunities and outcomes for First Nations students, and all students.
Carmel College seeks to achieve this vision by walking together with First Nations students, families and community on a journey of positive change, bringing understanding and respect of First Nations histories and cultures to the awareness of the whole school community.
To help foster equality and equity between First Nations peoples and other Australians we commit to creating a culturally responsive and understanding environment for First Nations students and families, and all members of our College community by.
- Promoting and supporting meaningful educational opportunities for First Nations students and their families.
- Developing strong and respectful relationships between First Nations people and non-Indigenous students, parents/caregivers, teaching and non-teaching staff.
- Demonstrating commitment to diversity by recognising the unique diversity of First Nation peoples’ cultures and heritages locally and across Australia.
- Ensuring access to the highest quality learning and career pathways programs for all students to be active citizens in the reconciliation journey.
- Respectfully embed First Nations' perspectives and cultures across all curriculum areas.
- Developing an awareness of social and cultural injustices, inequalities and inequities past and present, and a whole college understanding of the ongoing effects of dispossession since colonisation.
- Ensuring that the whole school community actively values the continuing importance and involvement of First Nations people in the life of the College.
To be one in Land, one in Spirit, as one community, united by God's love.
Our vision for reconciliation aligns with the Carmel College motto – “Let Your Light Shine”.
Jesus’ own words to us, as a constant reminder, is to be the best people we can be.
