At C&K Port Douglas Community Kingergarten we are a community of learners, connected to our environments, families and engaging regularly with our wider community. Our philosophy reflects a deep respect for local environment/flora/fauna and habitats. The children, educators and families are connected to the rich diversity of ecosystems that surrounds our kindy. Our program and places and spaces reflect this. The children frequently share their exploration of local creeks, rivers, rainforests, mountains, and beaches. Within this learning we embed a deep understanding of local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples ways of being and knowing. The local Kuku Yalanji people care for Country using local seasons, fire, waterways, landscapes and flora and fauna. We endeavour to learn about their rich knowledge, art and language and respectfully share (where appropriate) with the children. We endeavour to build relationships with the local Kuku Yalanji Elders to come in to the centre and share their knowledge on caring for Country.
