This activity is a creative way for students to reflect on the important roles Elders and Traditional Owners play in sharing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories and cultures.
Students explore and express their understanding about Elders’ and Traditional Owners’ roles through writing a letter to them.
The letter doesn’t need to be sent. It’s about students’ personal reflection. It’s important to build relationships with community in other, face-to-face ways before sending letters.
Given the traditional emphasis on oral histories, writing letters may also not be an appropriate way to engage with your local Elders group.
You could use this exercise to find out the students’ interests and responses. This would give you information to:
start conversations with local Elders and Traditional Owners
arrange a future incursion/excursion so students can hear directly from these community leaders.
