Holy Cross OSHC Kincumber

Now in our second year of being, we are reflecting on where we have been and where we are going. We continue to aim to use our unique position in sculpting the development of children’s emotional and social wellbeing to teach about empathy, and to draw from the lessons of the past to co-create a positive vision for the future, a future in which Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and non-Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities within Australia stand equitably alongside one another with pride.

We feel as though we have moved towards establishing a space where children’s individuality contributes to a shared community identity, within which Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures are represented and celebrated, but are always reflecting and improving on our previous efforts. We always seek to provide a space where children can understand the relationship between their own experiences and to past and present experiences of First Australians, developing knowledge and understanding. Over the past year, we have used our space to facilitate meaningful exploration of cultural practices, histories and experiences, with educators aiming to respectfully incorporate perspectives from our local Aboriginal community to ensure relevance to the educational program. We have established a relationship with our local Aboriginal community, and are eager to ensure that this blossoms into a genuine partnership of teaching and learning for educators and children alike.
