St. John the Baptist Out of School Hours Care

VISION FOR RECONCILIATION

As a service that serves many of our local families, we endeavour to ensure that cultural competencies, and respect and celebration of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and practices, will become organically embedded in our day to day practices as we grow.

We aim to use our unique position in sculpting the development of children’s emotional and social wellbeing to teach about empathy, and to draw from the lessons of the past to co-create a positive vision for the future, a future in which Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and non-Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities within Australia stand equitably alongside one another with pride.

We envision a space where children’s individuality contributes to a shared community identity, within which Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures are represented and celebrated. We seek to provide a space where children can understand the relationship between their own experiences and to past and present experiences of First Australians, developing knowledge and understanding. Ideally, this space will also facilitate meaningful exploration of cultural practices, histories and experiences, with educators aiming to respectfully incorporate perspectives from our local Aboriginal community, the Darkinjung people, to ensure relevance to the educational program.

We are committed to engaging with other local services and our school community to build knowledge and understanding that is relevant to our space, and developing relationships with local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities to build genuine partnerships of knowledge and connection.
