Our vision for reconciliation is for our Only About Children's community to acknowledge and respect the cultures and contributions to Australia of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. As educators we aspire to do this through supporting our wider community to develop an understanding and knowledge of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples’ cultural heritages, histories and continuing contributions.
Our vision is to provide leadership to educators, children, families and the wider community in supporting meaningful relationships between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and non-Indigenous people that are respectful, welcoming and inclusive.
OAC Surry Hills’ vision for reconciliation is based on the core principles of community and collaboration, which underpin the work we do every day in supporting children’s education.
Our Campus has led us to question and challenge why we do what we do every day to ensure Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples are actively recognised and appreciated in meaningful ways.
As the Traditional Owners and Custodians of Lands across Australia, the Torres Strait Islands and the surrounding waters, we have so much to learn from Australia's First Peoples, as we strive for more ethical, interconnected and inclusive communities.
We recognise that unless OAC Surry Hills is committed to reconciliation through adopting a practical plan, the small and significant changes necessary to shift from positions of racism, ignorance, and tokenism will not be achieved.
We believe that our Reconciliation Action Plan will provide practical strategies for building and renewing deeper partnerships and engagement with Aboriginal communities, organisations, families and individuals so that we can learn from each other as we work to build a more equitable and socially just nation.
