Pooh Bear’s House ELC values and respects the respectfully teaching about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples and communities throughout Australia, particularly the Wurundjeri Woi-Wurrung People, whose Land we reside on.
Our vision for reconciliation at PBH is an accepting and inviting community that encourages all children, families and educators to learn and develop on their reconciliation journey. We would like to see the local community be accepting and inclusive of all cultures, histories, perspectives and ways of being, especially those of First Nations peoples. We aim to not only acknowledge reconciliation, but we aim to be champions for change. Our goal is to educate families about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples’ perspectives, histories, contributions and ways of being, in order to promote equality and equity for First Nations peoples. We acknowledge that activism involves holding space and knowing when to remain silent, to place First Nations voices at the forefront of conversations concerning equality, equity and self-determination.
We believe that all members of our community can and should learn about Australia’s true histories and learn about the Traditional Owners are of the Land that we live, work and learn on. We aspire to not shy away from difficult conversations regarding colonisation, and the past and ongoing impact on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. We will admit when we, as a service, have made mistakes in the past when our education and unlearning had not occurred, and we will do our best to learn from those mistakes to ensure that we are moving forward respectfully and together. We will be an actively inclusive and responsive service, whereby we engage in activism regularly, and encourage the youngest citizens that we teach as well.
PBH will respectfully integrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples’ voices into our curriculum, and become allies, capable of assisting with change.
We say 'Wominjeka' and know that our purpose is to advance our knowledge of First Nations peoples, histories and cultures in every learning experience.
