At Mama Bear we understand and value the importance of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander education and teaching in Australia. We believe that respect between First Nations peoples and the wider community is the key for building a better future for all Australians. The power of education and strong community relationships can change the future by fostering equality and equity and raising awareness of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples’ cultures, histories and continuing contributions. We continue to promote ways to engage children and families in early childhood education to become culturally responsive and respectful of the Traditional Owners and Custodians of the Land. We support our early learning community to build strong relationships with other organisations and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities as we work together towards reconciliation. We want the children under our care and their families to reflect upon previous and current events of significance to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, as well as to understand the impact of these events on past and future generations. Further, as stated in the Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (2008) Article 14, Indigenous Peoples have the right to establish and control their educational system, provide education in their own language and value aspects of their culture for learning and teaching, and so we commit ourselves to facilitating eual and equitable access to culturally responsive education .
