Explore & Develop Artarmon

VISION FOR RECONCILIATION

Explore & Develop Artarmon believes that reconciliation is an important part of teaching and learning in our setting.

We share Reconciliation Australia’s vision of a reconciled, just and equitable Australia and acknowledge that past government policies and practices have disadvantaged Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

Explore & Develop Artarmon draws inspiration from the 8 Ways Aboriginal Pedagogy from Western NSW, the Bringing Them Home report, and our emerging relationships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, in creating a vision for reconciliation.

Explore & Develop Artarmon wishes to affirm the special place Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have as the First Australians by:

  • Continuing to learn about the many diverse Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories.
  • Acknowledging that language is integral to developing a sense of identity and that we can support all children’s connection to the Cammeraygal people by respectfully incorporating Dharug and Guringai languages in our setting based on the guidance of our local community.
  • Embedding Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspectives in our teaching through explorations of traditional and contemporary aspects of cultures and languages.
  • Building relationships with the local Aboriginal community (the Cammeraygal people and other Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who live in the area from other Countries).

We envision a future society in which Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and non-Indigenous people:

  • understand each other and respect our different languages and cultures
  • are able draw on each other’s knowledge systems to enhance learning and see things from each other’s perspectives (refer to the “both ways” approach).
