Servant or Slave (Secondary)

overview

The activities in this resource have been shared from the SBS Learn website, and have been shaped around three short clips and five additional vignettes from the documentary Servant or slave. The documentary uses first-person accounts, archival footage and reconstructions to give a powerful and evocative insight into the domestic servitude forced on Aboriginal women in 20th-century Australia.

With the support of their teachers, students can draw on the activities within this resource to develop a greater understanding of:

- the Stolen Generations: the impact of policies of forced removal of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children from their families
- Stolen Wages and the struggle for reparations
- the Sugar Labour Trade.

While exploring these historical issues, students are also encouraged to consider their relationship with current affairs and issues of relevance to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, and to reconciliation in Australia.
